Eidos Interactive

Eidos' beginnings in the early 1990s was as a proprietary technology company employing a handful of individuals. Eidos has since undergone a dramatic transformation process to arrive at its current status as a diverse and well rounded Entertainment and Technological Group utilizing nearly 500 staff. In October 1995 the first of a series of acquisitions and investments was completed. Companies acquired since that date include The Domark Group, Simis, Big Red Software and Centregold plc (comprising Core Design and US Gold). In addition, Glassworks and Naked Records have been added to the fold alongside a program of acquiring minority equity stakes in or signing exclusive output deals with a number of game development studios including ION Storm, Hothouse Creations, Tigon, and Innerloop. This strategy allows a high quality release schedule to be maintained through both internal and external talent.

Eidos Interactive is the publishing umbrella under which all the development studios operate. The acquisition of key sector development studios, alongside a program of both acquiring minority equity stakes in, and signing exclusive output deals with, a number of games development studios, has created a formidable development resource, fusing years of gaming experience and expertise. By consolidating this diverse pool of talent and ability and empowering it with significant financial investment, ground-breaking titles will be released on all formats. Eidos Interactive Inc., San Francisco and Eidos Interactive Limited, London, are the Eidos in-house development studios specializing in role-playing games (RPGs), resource management and strategy titles. The UK studio is responsible for the forthcoming smash-hit Deathtrap Dungeon. The game is based on Chairman Ian Livingstone's Fighting Fantasy book series, which has sold 15 million copies world-wide.

In the middle of May 2005, during the annual E3 show, European publisher SCi announced it had officially acquired the then-beleaguered Eidos. A few months later, the merged company announced that it would use the internationally recognized Eidos label for its future releases, due in particular to familiarity that North American gamers have with that brand name. The name of the parent company, however, remained SCi Entertainment Group.

Square Enix Co., Ltd. acquired Eidos in April 2009 and chose to continue to use the brand name for publishing.
